My wife delivered our first baby in Memorial Hermann (Memorial City) and I want to share our experience to provide insights for other future mothers. While the nursing team and my wife’s OBGYN are outstanding, our delivery experience was profoundly damaged by the on-call OBGYN, Dr. Fangxian Lu, whose appalling conduct and unprofessionalism warrant serious warning.

I want to start off the review on the positives. My wife's OBGYN, Dr. Blancas, is attentive, sharp, and superb in articulating her thoughts/reasoning. From anasthesiology, Dr. Martinez, was the one who corrected my wife's epidural placement and successfully managed her pain during induced labor contractions. The nursing staff were angels on earth that provided excellent care and great advocates for their patients. All the nurses were fantastic. Specifically, I want to highlight the following people by their respective units:

-Labor & delivery: Ashley, Alejandra, and Rebekah.
-Post-partum: Summer, Aliece, Kimmy.
-Lactation: Mimoza.

I cannot stress enough our gratitude to nurse Ashley who effectively delivered our son without other staff. She's a bit tough but genuinely the best nurse in care of my wife. We are indebted to her, as well as the others named above.

The negatives. My wife's scheduled induced labor was delayed by 8 hours due to bed shortages. Her epidural needle was installed (3) times by (2) different anesthesiologists before ultimately getting the lasting pain management relief; (4) if you count a needle readjustment. Finally, once she was finally dilated and ready to push for delivery, an on-call OBGYN had to step in since my wife's dedicated OBGYN hours had since passed (though she tried to stay as late as she could).

The on-call OBGYN, Dr. Fangxian Lu, has to be one of the absolute worst doctors imaginable to be residing in the practice of Labor & Delivery who regularly attends to expecting mothers. If you are in her care, I warn you to reconsider, and if she ends up covering for your OBGYN - avoid at all costs. She lacked empathy, bedside manners, and was openly rude. At first meeting, we chalked it up to personality differences but it became evident that it was not that. She openly mocked and discouraged my wife through facial expressions, exasperations, and rude comments. One that comes to mind is belittling her efforts to push, and saying a cough could push the baby further out than her current efforts. Mind you, it was only minutes into pushing her first baby, as well experiencing numbing from the epirdural. She did not provide constructive inputs for supporting my wife push. The tension in the room amongst the staff (e.g., nurses and techs) was palpable. Dr. Fangxian Lu made also made a comment of other things she had to attend to as the on-call OBGYN, and she proceeded to collect the staff out the room. Our nurse Ashley was left with us in the room to push the baby out. In hindsight, it might've also been a saving grace that Dr. Lu left, since it allowed for Ashley to take the lead and coach/encourage my wife through the delivery; something Dr Lu could not do. Ashley successfully delivered our son, with Dr. Lu and staff arriving just in time to see it. After delivery, we were privy to Dr. Lu's communication with the staff and thought some conversations were inappropriate in front of the patient, specifically issues with the operation (e.g., forgetting something, indiscreet comments, etc.). I write this review to hopefully inform others to avoiding this nightmare my wife went through. A nightmare that persists after returning home. A nightmare that she's reminded of when looking at our son's birth certificate.

We got in about 15 mins and ER nurse practitioner assisted us, they took us to triage room where 4 patients shared a room and where sitting in a recliner no bed, we thought it was temporary but then Iv and other medication where administered while we waited there for 4 hours. How can patients who came to ER can sit like that, no-one was comfortable and what if they hv contagious conditions it will easily spread. we never met the duty dr when we asked they said no you only would see ET nurse and they will communicate with duty doctor. I totally understand they might have to deal with more critical patients. However i wanted to post this, so other patients will know what to expect.

The attitudes in the emergency department is ridiculous. From the security, the desk help , the nurses all the way to the valet department. Its like nobody wants to be at work. Obviously nothing is being done about this according to the reviews and the star ratings...the ONLY reason I gave 3 stars is because my mother was taken better care of once she was admitted and had her own room. Security talking to grown adults like children...telling them to back up and get in line ..but yelling the whole time was unnecessary...talk to ppl like you want to be spoken to. The rude girls behind the desk...one lady asked how long was the wait..the desk clerk nurse or whatever she was told the lady she can leave..just because she asked a question super rude and that lady wasn't even rude when asking. One other lady checking someone's vitals...told the patient..go sit out there....when she was done instead of asking her to have a seat in the waiting area...these ppl act like they have no home training. The whole hospital had more police there than patrolling the streets and I see why...all attitudes were nasty. On to the back..I believe this staff of young ppl..didn't know what the hell they were doing...but got an attitude when questions were asked...specifically the nurse that was on the team for my loved one .. Michele her attitude was nasty..and nonchalant. Fast forward to the valet person...someone refused her help getting into the vehicle...she talked crap and cussed the whole time. In front of us...you all really need to revamp your team cus the one you have is trash. The only reason we were here is because my mom was transferred here...this wasn't a place we chose on our own. Never had a good experience with Memorial Hermann facilities every time we had to use them...EVER!!!!

I had an okay experience with the nurses and staff as far as care. BUT.....The cleaning staff stole my narcotic medication from my purse. I called the police and made a report while I was there. Now I'm suffering because my doc won't give me a refill because of the strict state laws.

I love this hospital they move fast, doctors and nurses are very kind. They always figure out whats wrong. But one thing that blows my mind every-time I come, is the older black lady in the emergency room desk. She takes your name, birthday, and reason for being here. The last 5 times Ive came or brought family shes has never missed a opportunity to be rude or passive aggressive. Its disgusting, she is the face of the people coming in at a horrible time.. Find someone who’ll greet people and not make it feel like you coming to the ER is a chore for her.

I recently gave birth at Memorial Hermann Memorial City in July and wanted to share a detailed review of my experience — the good, the great, and unfortunately, the disappointing.

The Positives: Exceptional Early Care & Support
The check-in process was seamless, thanks to my decision to pre-register. Upon arrival, the Labor & Delivery Emergency Room nurses were attentive and communicative. They let me know that my water hadn’t broken, I was 3 cm dilated, and my blood pressure was slightly elevated. My doctor made the call to admit me and begin Pitocin and an epidural.

Once transferred to a labor room, I was fortunate to be assigned **Nurse Joy**, who was nothing short of phenomenal. I experienced a scary adverse reaction to the epidural, during which my blood pressure dropped significantly. Joy remained by my side throughout, calling in a second anesthesiologist for further evaluation.

Unfortunately, that anesthesiologist’s response — “What do you want me to do?” — caught me completely off guard and made an already frightening situation worse. Still, Joy’s presence and dedication helped me feel as safe as possible in that moment.

The birth itself went smoothly, and the **night nurses and lactation consultants** in the early postpartum days (Thursday and Friday) were compassionate, helpful, and knowledgeable. I felt supported and well-cared for.

The Negatives: A Sharp Decline in Weekend Care
Unfortunately, my positive experience took a sharp downturn on **Saturday**, when a new shift of staff took over. The issues began after my baby’s temperature dropped slightly following a bath. Initially, this wasn’t considered a concern, as it was likely bath-related. However, as discharge approached, I was told I could leave, but they were hesitant to release my baby — not due to any immediate health concerns, but seemingly out of concern for the doctor’s record if a readmission occurred.

I tried to offer a reasonable alternative: that we go home and I monitor my baby every 2–3 hours, especially since we had a pediatrician appointment early Monday morning. I was told they would only check her temperature every 12 hours, which felt inadequate. The doctor didn’t offer a clear plan of action, and the communication felt more focused on liability than on care.

When I finally decided to proceed with discharge at 4 PM (after a normal temperature reading), things truly deteriorated. I thanked the doctor — her only response was a curt “yeah.” From that point on, I felt **ignored, dismissed, and abandoned**.

Concerning Lapses in Care on Saturday
* **No discharge assistance**: We were not offered help packing, no final checks were performed, no water, no comfort items — nothing.
* **No car seat check** and **alarm bracelet + umbilical clip left on**.
* Despite repeatedly explaining that I brought my own medications (with prior approval from my doctor), they continued scanning hospital-issued prenatal vitamins and charging me. One nurse told me I needed pharmacy clearance, but no one ever followed up.
* **Photographer**: I asked several times for help contacting the hospital photographer since the number provided was disconnected. No one followed through.
* **Paperwork**: The birth certificate and footprint documentation were never filled out.
* **Nurse presence**: After requesting discharge, I only saw my nurse briefly three times. It was as if we no longer existed.

This drastic change from the compassionate care I received earlier in the week to the **disorganized, dismissive treatment** on Saturday left a lasting negative impression on what should have been one of the most joyful experiences of my life.

I hope this feedback is taken seriously and used to improve communication, continuity of care, and discharge procedures for future patients.

Delivered in October ‘24. The nurses and staff were amazing and caring before and after. The rumor about c-sections seems to be true because that’s what happened to me, but my decision was NOT something the hospital influenced.

My only complaint is after my c-section. While I was in the PAC-U. My pain medications were NOT there and ready to go. I’m not sure where the disconnect was. If it was the hospital pharmacy, if no one put it in one time or what. I was left screaming in pain for half an hour in the PAC-U. Not cool guys. That was probably the first time I heard my fiancé cry since I met him. However, thank you Nurse Isabelle for laying into the hospital pharmacy to give me those meds STAT!

I wish I could go back and apologize to anyone that heard me screaming that day.

I did have a couple of anxious moments in my pregnancy where I went to L&D ER. Everyone was always kind and attentive when I went and reassured my anxiety when I felt dumb for showing up.

Will I be delivering here for my next pregnancy? Probably not, but I’m glad for the decent care I was received.
