We asked if they accepted our insurance but was told by Derik that he was not allowed to tell us if they accepted our insurance. He couldn't give us a cost estimate either. We had to show him our ID 3 times. I would not go there again after dealing with Derik. The nurses and doctors were great however. I would appreciate a response from Memorial Hermann.

We’re looking into our legal options for this experience.
I’ve come to this emergency room for every need for over four years. Tonight we came for a cyst/ abscess that ruptured and was infected and the front desk guy was an absolute racist. From the moment he saw us, he looked at us with repulse. Every response came with an eye roll from him and “mhmm” as any yes response. Clearly discriminate. He said his name was Derrick; he had glasses, rather large man with black curly hair in a man bun and a septum ring piercing.
When we were checking in and explaining what was causing pain he said verbatim, “so like not a real emergency.” I didn’t know front desk workers had ANY type of medical degree to be able to decide what is and isn’t an emergency and to tell the patient that. What took me off guard was how quick his entire demeanor and tone changed from how he was behaving with the white couple in line ahead of us when we came in, to the pure disgust that he treated us with when we stepped up to the counter.
At discharge “Derrick” said we had to pay $350 to be able to leave because of no insurance and (also verbatim said,) “medical care isn’t free in this country, ya know.” When we asked about having it billed to us like we’ve had done every single other time without any issue, rather with or without insurance, he said no. He said that’s not a possible option. He said we had to pay before we leave. He actually said all the other front desk workers weren’t doing their job because they’re suppose to get payment upfront but that sometimes the front desk person will choose what patients can have their charges billed to their address or who has to pay upfront for emergency care. He wouldn’t explain why he was choosing to force an upfront payment from us, either. We even explained how we had just lost our insurance because of losing our job and he literally SMIRKED while still demanding payment. Like he thought it was funny or like it was a power trip for him that we didn’t have any insurance, job and not able to afford this deposit he was demanding. It felt like a hostage situation when he kept saying we couldn’t leave without paying him. He also kept repeating we’d be put on a list for refusal of payment, meaning we would be banned from receiving medical care. Btw, it is against FEDERAL law under the EMTALA to refuse emergency medical care on any basis, including ability to pay.
Just because we’re Muslim, doesn’t mean we don’t know how the emergency room works. He thought we were immigrants and that he could stiff arm us as though we didn’t know any better.
When we asked for any kind of document explaining the charge, because we’ve never had this happen, he said we’d get a receipt once we paid him the payment but that he didn’t have anything for us to have to prove this charge but that it’s “always been a thing since like forever.” (His words.)
On the discharge papers he had us fill out on the tablet, we selected the option to get psychical paper copies of everything being signed and he refused to provide us those documents as well.
That aside, the nurse and Dr Tenke were truly amazing. They were brisk and urgent with the situation explaining that it is in fact a cyst that ruptured and was infected and demonstrated the urgency of draining the abscess immediately.
Edited to add: really read and notice the reviews being left regarding Derek. Notice everyone of diversity have their own examples of Derek’s blatant racism. How he’s still employed here is beyond me.

I should’ve listened to comments but was desperate to feel better been dealing with a stomach bug for about 4 days. Weak from no real food and dehydrated from constant diarrhea. The doctor said he couldn’t do anything. he couldn’t give me an IV and stated that my vitals looked good. I asked what were my vitals and he didn’t know.. he had to leave and ask another nurse? a waste of time! I needed care and help and got neither!

Their doctors do not communicate or care. They found endometrial cancer in me in 2019 and went way out of their way not to tell me. Now I'm dying from it. This is not the first time or last time this has happened. This is their culture. They don't care whether you live or die. This is criminal.

I visited this location earlier today due to nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness and other symptoms from what I believed to be food poisoning. The registration was very quick and I was called back by a nurse within 10 minutes. I quickly learned the my BP was off the charts and was placed into a room for an EKG. While I was being treated, the intake individual from the front desk stood outside my room waiting for more information about my insurance. I did not find this to be professional at all especially considering how ill I was at that moment. Nevertheless, I provided her once again with my insurance info. Towards the end of my treatment, nurses begin changing and the doctor ordered one last round of IVs. I explained to the nurse that came in with discharge papers what the doctored ordered however she disregarded and proceeded to roughly remove my IV. She DID NOT assist with removing the numerous EKG stickers and left the room. Thankfully, another individual passed by and noticed me struggling to get them off. I explained to her that I was still very weak and the nurse left me to do it on my own so she helped me out. Not to mention the intake individual was back outside the room wanting more signatures. I felt overall rushed and slightly disregarded. Maybe because I’m AA and they assumed I didn’t have insurance? I will visit a different ER tomorrow as my symptoms are still very prevalent. I should have read the other reviews prior to risking my life driving to this location…..

I will never go to this ER again. I am 76 and only been to an ER 3 times…two times here within 3 days. I had been having intense stomach pain. After first visit I had EDG and doctor sent me back to ER for ultra sound on my gallbladder so he could admit me if need be. The ER doctor said” your CT scan 2 days a go didn’t show anything” kAfter 5 hours I got ultrasound. People going into back …some laughing and talking …playing on their phones…after 9 hours I said “I am hurting and need to go home” receptionist said
“if you go home you can’t get results” at 10.5 hours they come get me to go into back…all of a sudden they give me IV and pain meds and told me they wanted to ship me to main hospital via ambulance… 6 days and surgery later I come home with tube in my stomach in case they need to do follow up surgery. There was one person in ER when they called me back and they had been there 30 minutes.
Don’t go to this ER. No one is in a hurry to take care of you….no one is in a hurry at all.
My surgery team and GI specialist were amazing at Texas medical Center.
I wish I could sue….i am just not the type to do that to the hospital for what staff did.

Dishonest people. We agreed for a $300 copay on my surgery and one of the managers called me to assure me that I would not have any issues and then they sent the remaining amount to collections. Do not trust them. Michal Gkampitsi

I had a procedure there 2 weeks ago and they laid me on dirty sheets with somebody else's pubic hair on it. We took pictures and counted at least thirty hairs. I emailed the facility and asked a supervisor to call me eight days ago and have had no response. Do not use them!

This hospital is in violation of the No Surprises Act of the 2021 Consolidated Appropriations Act by listing themselves as an Urgent Care facility within the insurance industry but then billing patients as an Emergency Center. I will be contacting the Federal Trade Commission to investigate on behalf of myself and the rest of every other American consumer who was financially taken advantage of at this location. Hopefully some of use can be rightfully reimbursed.
Be prepared to pay for an Emergency Room visit NOT an Urgent Care center. If I knew that I’d be billed for ER visit I would have went to the ER closest to my home instead of driving all the way out there. Earlier that day my Primary Care Physician suggested I go to an Urgent Care clinic for immediate treatment so I ended up going here after seeing it listed as an Urgent Care facility. After a failed IV attempt, The ER doctor at this location did nothing but refer me back to my regular Primary Care Physician. Then at the end I was handed a surprise ER bill. Waste of time and money
