My young teenage child was admitted here recently for ~4 months. We were referred to this facility, from far out of state (few thousand miles away), by our insurer, due to our child's combination of co-occurring medical and severe psychological complications -- which means very few facilities in the country were suitable, with Nexus being one of them.
As a family, our journey was very stressful already. We are overall happy with the facility, and thankful for their treatment. What helped:
- Meeting the staff, both in person and through online Care Conferences, helps establish more personal connections
- The psychotherapy staff is very experienced and battle-hardened, yet compassionate and balanced. The psychotherapy director (initials N.S.) is very astute and a great source of insight.
- Having schooling on-site (through Univ of TX Univ Charter Sch) adds structure to the day, on top of group therapy
- Assigned therapist treats child as primary client (including protecting confidentiality within limits, which builds trust and helps treatment) and still engages us (parents) responsively. Her deep experience and calm demeanor helped a lot with our child.
- Twice-daily landline phone calls allowed, from child to family
Tips for other parents considering Nexus:
- If your child has a complex profile, you may be worried about the lack of options: you can't go too wrong here at all; Nexus CH is not perfect but they are genuine, dedicated professionals
- You get out of it what you put in i.e. more engagement from staff if you engage them proactively. Nexus staff deal with many dysregulated teens with absent parents/families, and may not be proactive all the time or right from the start, because some parents are checked-out and would rather not be contacted too often.
- Some key professionals are critical to the child's care; engage them thoughtfully, be respectful of their time/bandwidth but don't be shy to raise concerns
- Discuss expectations on when you would like to be called by the nursing staff e.g. if there are minor behavior issues
- If you leave stuff with the Nursing staff (e.g. to pass to child later), be sure to label them! they are overwhelmed and you want to avoid misplacements.

Yeah soo I been here for like a month and the doctor were all nice and the nurses were trying to help you as much as they can and I’m happy that I was in the hospital soo thanks to everyone in this hospital and was happy in here I did respect them like my family and I do like everyone in here every one was nice and they didn’t matter who you is they were trying to be nice to you and I did made a friend that he a good guy his name is Michael but cuz he was my friend I called him Michael Jordan and everyone is here was kind and respectful and I felt like I’m living in home for this hole time cuz everyone was nice and respectful and kind I love the people in this hospital cuz they are all nice 🫶

My son Bryce and I were transported from Beaumont Texas to Nexus Hospital on December 21st 2023 due to a Serious Back injury from a 4 wheeler accident 😢 my son at the time was 15 and very down and we didn't know what expect .... But upon our arrival the staff was very helpful and polite... They accommodate our needs.a Bed was place in his Room 👍 So I could stay full time until his recovery on January 3rd 2024... .The Doctor's and Nurses and physical therapy Staff are Amazing very attentive and Nice ... The administrative coordinator Ms.Dionne C. was a God -send ... Any complaint anything we needed She jumped on top of it and she got it taken care of....
I had sent her pictures of a situation that was going on with the food from the kitchen... once she received this information ... she brought the Head dietary technician of the kitchen into my son's room and we discussed problems and then it was fixed immediately.... Any concerns that I had she got on top of it...
I text her last week and I needed a Doctor's excuse for my son.She even went as for as getting in touch with the medical staff.That treated him and email me a Doctors excuse he needed for School .... I recommend this specialty hospital to anyone with Children with a Serious injuries They are professional and family oriented there's not too many places in texas that treat children and I would highly recommend this facility. My family and I was nervous about what will happen to B once he moved to this facility about 4 weeks ago. He had a stroke on December 16th. The staff here were very kind to us and made us feel welcome and heard beginning the first day of arrival. My primary focus was for him to have daily therapy to include OT, PT and Speech. Thanks so so much Lauren, Doreen, Jordan and Ashley in training. They were so good with pushing and helping B daily. Thanks to my case managers Danielle and Yolanda as the heard me and worked options for me. Thanks Dion for always making sure I was good and Bryant has everything he needed. Thanks doctors and nurses as well. The Conner’s ❤️
What can I say? Absolutely outstanding staff. The Patient Advocate Dionne will go above and beyond to make sure you and your family are ok, even after you leave. Thank you to Jordan and Doreen OT and PT for all your help and understanding and williness to bring joy to our life. Last but not leatst Yolanda, case manager, for the hours spend searching and keeping us informed. Nexus Shenandoah you just will not find a better staff from the highest to the lowest. Thank you
Nexxus Childrens was amazing! They were compassionate and flexible with our special needs son and did fantastic job with his wound healing. After a year of battling the same injury, we are so thankful for their approach to healing.
Poor communication. You need to be there every day checking on your loved one.
Not attentive to patients in their rooms. My dad had to call me when he had chests pains, so that I would call Nexus and get someone in his room, ambulance was then called.

My name is Jessica V. , for the last 9 1/2 months I have in Hospitals with my son (28yrs) Jeffrey who suffered a severe Defuse Ischemic Hypoxic brain damage.
Thanks to God I have had the opportunity to be in the TOP NEURO HOSPITAL REHABILITATION PLACES of the WORLD and I have stayed in each place for monthsssss.
When we arrived at NEXUS Specialty Hospital my son was in critical kidneys condition, this was after being with him in 3 places, one of them TIRR (4 1/2 months).
I am unable to express my GRATITUDE to this phenomenal team.
WHAT CURRICULUM OF DOCTORS THEY HAVE Dr. Kass and Dr. Parrilla have extraordinary curriculums, I couldn’t believe how BLESSED we are to be here. My list can go on and on and on from Dr. Sparkman to NP Tabatha, NP Nephrologist Nosheen to Michelle nutritionist to every single member of NEXUS STAFF Nurses Manager Vicky, Diyami, Bea to Nurses like CarolynAnn, Katherine, Jimimah, Mairelys and Janette etc etc and nurse assistances like Tanya, Kay K, Gloria etc etc etc and Angie head of Nurse Education to EVERY SINGLE MEMBER OF NEXUS like therapist Doreen and Jordan THESE PEOPLE ARE AMAZING.
This team SAVED my son Kidneys and brought him back to LIFE! …
But what I want to talk the most is how they treat their patients and families, they dance with Jeffrey, they play with Jeffrey, but the most important THEY LOVE JEFFREY. This has been THE PLACE that I can go home to sleep and rest and can do it at PEACE because I know that they are watching and caring for my ONLY SON as if he was theirs.
I AM SO GRATEFUL TO ALL OF THEM and is not fare that I cannot mention all of them.
To make things better NEXUS OWNS the 3 places that people like me need for their love ones, 1. The Hospital side with ICU and LTAC unit, 2. Hospital Rehab and 3. NEXUS NEURORECOVERY CENTER where my son is going next and I am THRILLED that Jeffrey will have this opportunity.
There he will be under the care and custody of Dr.Parrilla who is a GENIUS in Neuro-recovery, spasticity, involuntary movements etc etc and whom I know has one of the BEST knowledge.and background of this nation. .
I cannot tell you how this people has treated me, treated my husband George who is a champion as a stepdad (father) and my ADORE SON JEFFREY, they have gone ABOVE and BEYOND expectations.
Finally I want to thank all the cleaning ladies who are absolutely WONDERFUL! .
