NYU Stern projects a polished image of ethics, leadership, and moral seriousness. My lived experience has been the opposite.

Across multiple interactions with Stern-affiliated students and alumni, I consistently encountered a culture that felt self-interested, transactional, and ethically hollow—people more focused on signaling prestige than practicing integrity. The school’s reputation seems to function less as a moral standard and more as cover, allowing behavior that would otherwise be questioned to go unchallenged.

What troubled me most wasn’t any single interaction, but the pattern: a repeated absence of accountability, empathy, or responsibility, paired with confidence rooted almost entirely in the Stern name. The contrast between the school’s public messaging and the conduct I observed was stark.

If you’re choosing Stern because you believe it cultivates principled leadership, I recommend looking beyond the branding and asking harder questions about the culture you’re actually entering.

There was a very rude female receptionist with purple glasses. I simply asked her for the exact location of my classroom and showed her the name of my college. Because I couldn't pronounce the name of Tisch College, she deliberately made things difficult for me and demanded that I say the name in front of another receptionist. She wouldn't tell me the classroom unless I said the name. Fortunately, the other receptionist sitting in the chair at the front desk politely told me the classroom, which angered the bespectacled receptionist who questioned why she had told me. I felt discriminated against. I just wanted to ask for directions because I couldn't find my classroom. In any case, I found the classroom on my own because the other receptionist's directions were incorrect. Of course, I was also 15 minutes late for class.
